  • Locate living areas to catch the north sun’s warmth when needed

  • Carefully position windows generally

  • Provide suitable natural ventilation via careful sized and positioned windows

  • Install adequate insulation to walls and ceilings including aluminium foil to external walls

  • Consider use of a solar hot water system

  • Solar hot water panels must be positioned in a northerly aspect to catch the full value of the sun and deliver a 60 per cent solar gain

  • Water tanks are best positioned on the side of the house that receives the most shade

  • Consider zoned heating and cooling systems

  • Provide thermal mass from concrete slab and/or floor tiles and/or brick walls

  • Select appliances with high star ratings

  • Select water saving taps and shower heads
